The following information will hopefully be helpful and serve as a guide for a successful school year.

Class Overview

ELA classes are 60 minutes and will consist of a variety of warm-ups, class selected novels, related fiction and non-fiction readings of varied genres, writing pieces, vocabulary, research, and grammar instruction.

Students will complete five modules during the course of the year with a class novel and other sources of reading embedded into each module.

Module One The Watsons Go to Birmingham,1963
by Christopher Paul Curtis

Module Two Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy
by Gary D. Schmidt

Module Three Freak the Mighty
by Rodman Philbrick

Module Four Call of the Wild
by Jack London

Module Five- Out of the Dust
by Karen Hesse

Expectations

Students are expected to arrive to class prepared with a laptop computer fully charged, class book, independent reading novel, ELA folder, and a pencil and highlighter.

Students will use the check-out procedures at the school library for their assigned class novels.  Therefore, all class novels will be cared for as a library book.

Students can expect ELA homework nightly.  While students will have an assigned novel to read, please still encourage your child to read a variety of materials for pleasure.  Each marking period, students are required to select an independent book to read and complete a project assigned by the teacher. During the second marking period, students are required to select a nonfiction book for their independent read.

Homework

Students will have a teacher assigned reading every night to prepare for class discussion, follow up, and activities.  At times, there may be additional assignments beyond reading.  Please refer to the Community Portal for current and upcoming assignments.

Grading Policy

Grades are gathered from a variety of sources and are weighted accordingly: homework 10%, participation 15%, classwork 30%, tests/quizzes 45%.

Timely assignment completion is stressed to promote strong work ethic and responsibility.  In accordance with school district policy, secondary students will receive half credit for assignments turned in within two days of the due date, and 0% after this time period.

Please check the Community Portal regularly.  If you see an assignment marked incomplete or absent, encourage your child to complete it.

Please email, call school, or communicate in the planner, if you have any questions or concerns!
