8th Grade Science
Mr. Swink

Welcome:
Welcome to Science for the 2015/2016 school year. I am looking forward to a new group of students and am excited to get them involved in the processes of Physical and Earth Science. In 8th grade Physical Science we will cover units on the Nature of Science, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science. We will be working hard, learning together through various classroom learning activities, labs, reports and projects. All in preparation for the science PSSA's in April and for the students transition to the higher level High School sciences.
I truly enjoy the study of the Science. 8th grade science is a wonderful subject that involves a lot of hands on activities and labs. I work very hard at developing a curriculum that is interesting and as challenging as possible. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me by email at david_swink@wasd.k12.pa.us or 762-1191.

Resources:

There is a link below for online textbook if the students wish to use it for homework assignments and review at home. Additionally the online textbook does have an audio textbook which will read each section aloud for the students. Your student has been assigned log in information that was sent home on the first day of school. Please feel free to email me if you need me to resend the information home with your student.

General Practices:

1. All assignments are to be turned in on time with late work automatically receiving lower point values. This information can be found in your students syllabus. Work due to absences may be turned in within a prescribed time period. (see planner).

2. All parents should read the Syllabus, Class Expectations sheet and the Science Behavioral Contract which students received on opening day. The behavior contract will have to be returned to me with a parent signature.

3. All missing work can be picked up in the missed work box in the classroom. It is the students responsibility to get their make-up work completed and turned in within a reasonable period of time.

4. Grades and daily assignments can be viewed on the parent portal daily.

5. All students have been assigned a textbook. Students do not need to bring their textbook to class each day. I have a class set for the students to use. They will be able to keep their textbooks at home or at school to use during Braves Block.

6. An online textbook is available to students. Each student has been provided log in information on the first day of school and can be accessed at at
 www.pearsonsuccessnet.com

7. Feel free to email me if you need the log in information resent home.

8. Students will have homework or may need to complete classwork almost daily, but they may be able to complete it in school during Braves Block(7th period).

Use of Technology:

There are a few assignments that must be written using a computer and printed out. If the Internet is needed, the activity can be done at school during class time or after school. We will be using software on the school's computer lab. This is why it is imperative that students have a parent or guardian sign his or her technology consent form in their planner.
