The 8th grade ELA curriculum is followed in the resource room.  To view the curriculum click here. The ELA curriculum is divided into five modules, each organized by a guiding essential question.  The units consist of various fiction and nonfiction passages as well as a novel.  At the end of the unit, students will write an essay that answers the essential question.  The core curriculum is used and modified/adapted based on student needs.

Module 1: The Giver (Lois Lowry)
Module 2: Touching Spirit Bear (Ben Mikaelsen)
Module 3: The Outsiders (S.E. Hinton)
Module 4: Summer of my German Soldier (Bette Green)
Module 5:

All of the ELA teachers in the building will be using the same grading policy.  Here are the weights of the different categories of work:
Homework 10%
Classwork 20%
Tests/Quizzes 40%
Writing Assignments 30%

I have three classroom values that I presented to the class during the first day of school.  The students then helped to decide what rules should go with the classroom values.  Here is what the class decided:

We are respectful.
1. Raise hand and wiat to be called on by the teacher
2. Speak kindly
3. Don't interrupt
4. Keep hands and feet to self

Everyone has the right to learn.
1. Wrong answers are okay - we don't make fun of people who make a mistake
2. Don't interrupt learning by making noises or distractions

We are responsible.
1. Be prepared
2. Be on time
3. Do your work
4. Follow directions
