Parent Informational letter

Parent Informational Letter for 7th Grade ELA

Welcome to 7th grade ELA class!  We hope that the following information will be helpful and serve as a guide for a successful school year.

Class Overview

ELA classes are 60 minutes and will consist of a variety of warm-ups, class selected novels, related fiction and non-fiction reading of varied genres, writing pieces, vocabulary, research, and grammar instruction.

Students are expected to arrive in class prepared with their class book, binder, and writing utensils.

Students will be provided with supplemental reading materials to accompany each novel.  Students are responsible to keep these materials in working order and readily available.  If students do not keep these materials responsibly, they will be charged $1.00 for replacement.

Students will utilize the check-out procedures at the school library for their assigned class novels. Therefore, all class novels will be cared for as a library book.

Students can expect ELA homework.  While students will have an assigned novel to read, we still encourage your child to continue reading a variety of materials for pleasure.

When students are assigned reading it is to prepare for class discussions, follow-up, and activities.  At times, there may be additional assignments beyond reading.  Please refer to the community portal for current and upcoming assignments.

Grading Policy

Grades are gathered from a variety of sources and are weighted accordingly:  Homework 10%, Test/quizzes 45%, classwork 30%, participation 15%.

Timely assignment completion is stressed to promote strong work ethic and responsibility.  In accordance with school district policy, secondary students will receive half credit for assignments turned in within two days of the due date, and 0% after this time period, other than homework.  Homework will receive a zero if not completed by the due date.

Please check the Portal regularly.  If you see an assignment marked missing, incomplete, or absent, encourage your child to complete it.

Students will need the following supplies throughout the school year:

1” 3-ringed binder, sticky notes, notebook paper, pencils/pen, and highlighters.

The ELA department is excited to kick off the new school year with your student.  If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please contact us.
