Students are graded every instrumental lesson. Each lesson is worth ten points. Group lessons are worth 1/3 to 1/2 of the total quarter grade.  The Band rehearsal is worth ten points.  If you are in attendance with your instrument you will receive ten points.  If you have forgotten your instrument then you will receive six point.  If you are unexcused for the rehearsal you will receive five points for that rehearsal.  The Band Rehearsal grade is worth 1/3 to 1/2 of the total quarter grade  Each students attendance and behavior is recorded for full concert band rehearsals. The very first steps to receiving a high grade is to be there and have your instrument and music.

Two individual playing test are scheduled for the whole school year. The first test is the "Star Spangled Banner" memorization test. This test is administered in October. The second test is the end of the year scale test. The scale test is worth 25% of the students 4th quarter grade. It is administered in the month of May.  Other individual playing test on the concert music and other lesson material may be scheduled if the need is apparent.

All concerts are mandatory.  Not performing in the concert is like practicing for the big game and then not showing up.  Concerts are worth 1/4 to 1/3 of the quarter grade.

Individual progress can be attained through quality consistent practice coupled with asking questions in lessons about the material that we are studying. Additional after school instruction, for students who need a little extra reinforcement, is always welcome and available. The student will just need to ask Mr. Thorpe for help.

It is not as important how long a students practices, as it is how often they practice.

Even if they only have five minutes,
doing something is always better than doing nothing.
